Saving Energy with an Electric Space Heater
Saving energy is important for the environment, but also for the pocketbook. An electric space heater can present advantages in helping you maximize the overall energy efficiency of your home. It is an excellent way to heat certain zones of a home and is much safer and efficient than alternatives, when used properly.
Zoning with an Electric Space Heater
Many homes have certain rooms that are not used as often. During cold weather, it can be more cost-effective and environmentally responsible to use an electric space heater, instead of heating all the rooms of the home at once. With electric heating, just the “zones” that are used by people and animals can be kept at room temperature, while the unused area of the home are kept at a lower temperature, or not heated at all.
An Electric Space Heater is Safer and More Efficient than a Gas Space Heater
An electric space heater is clearly safer to use as an alternative to a gas space heater. Not only do gas units pose a greater risk of fire, they can also emit toxins such as carbon monoxide that can be harmful or fatal if not properly ventilated.
The heat produced by an electric space heater is very concentrated, which means that very little usage of the unit can provide ample heating to a space. They are also cleaner to use since they do not contain any combustibles used to produce heat.
Tips on Using an Electric Space Heater
Caution should be exhibited when using any heating device, even an electric space heater. Ensure the electrical connections are proper. Do not use indoor consumer quality extension cords; heavy duty (14 gauge wire minimum) is acceptable. (See manufacturer recommendations.) Plug the unit in directly to the wall whenever possible.
Store the unit on a stable surface when it is in use. Do not store it near water or areas where water usage commonly takes place, to avoid electrical shock hazards and heater corrosion.
Do not use a defective electric space heater. Bring it in for professional repair and cease use until it is in fully functional condition. This is also a good idea to do with your electric radiator.
